MTV Unplugged

MTV Unplugged is a show that was first broadcasted between 1989 and 2002 on MTV. In the show all kinds of famous artists were performing live just using an acoustic setup. Over the years artists like The Cure, R.E.M. and George Michael have been performing live. The one I remember most is with Nirvana which made a big impression on me when I was 13 years old.

Let’s skip a few years so we end up in the year 2016. As far as I know the show doesn’t really exist anymore. Except in Germany where they gave it an update and started airing it again with local artists. I think it was a test that went well because so far nobody had made an actual show package for it. Hence came the request to make one!

Because it was a show with a history that lived through different time frames I thought it seemed nice to incorporate the visual reference of a kaleidoscope. A kaleidoscope operates on the principle of multiple reflection, so in that way it conceptually reflects back and forth through time, just like the show. Earlier MTV got it’s latest channel graphics update. A big part was about simple 3D, a visual overload and lot’s of vibrant colours. Taking those things in consideration it was the perfect ground pane to build a symmetrical mosaic pattern of mostly acoustic instruments. The Graphic Package I created contains a show opener, vignette, wipes, lower thirds and a payoff.
